Rackham, Arthur
Rare books by Arthur Rackham, including first editions, signed limited editions, copies in fine bindings, and original artwork.
Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) was the dominant figure in the illustrated gift-book market in the years leading up to the First World War.
His greatest years of success were 1905–1920, but he had begun his career in the 1890s as a commercial book illustrator, working mostly in black and white. Two factors coincided with the onset of his remarkable success: his marriage in 1903 to Edyth Starkie, a considerable portrait painter in her own right; and the introduction of improved colour printing techniques, which allowed him to develop his early woodcut-like style towards a sharper line and more intense detail.
In his most successful period Rackham restricted his palette to soft colours laid over a yellowy-buff tone that lent an antique quality to the whole. This could be reproduced very effectively with the three-colour separation printing process that was a new feature of pre-First World War book production. Rackham increasingly drew witches, gnomes, fairies, and (his trademark) trees with human limbs and faces, all imbued with a slight but noticeable frisson of terror.
The publication of Rip Van Winkle (1905) decisively established him as the leading illustrator of the period. His exhibition of the original watercolours at the Leicester Galleries in March 1905, months before the book was published, established an annual ritual. It was at this exhibition that J. M. Barrie first saw his paintings and proposed him as the illustrator for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906), one of Rackham’s most successful ventures.
A typical Rackham book production involved a standard trade edition and a deluxe signed limited edition published simultaneously, the latter usually in a vellum binding with gilt-stamped decorations and silk ties to hold the boards closed, with a printed limitation leaf that was numbered and signed by Rackham. The trade editions were issued with printed dust jackets, but these were usually discarded at the point of sale, and so their survival is both unusual and highly desirable.
Rackham’s publishers Harrap also worked with the London binders Sangorski and Sutcliffe to produce the so-called “Rackham Specials”. These are extra-limited editions, usually ten or a dozen copies only, in full leather bindings by Sangorski stamped in gilt with blocks made from Rackham’s own designs, each copy with a unique sketch inserted, hand-drawn and signed in full by the artist. As Rackham himself pointed out, these “must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature … They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations”.
The First World War effectively destroyed the illustrated gift-book market in Britain, and in his later years Rackham increasingly found his best market in the United States. However, his final work, posthumously published, was for that quintessentially English book, Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows (1940).
