DULAC, Edmund.

Rare books by Edmund Dulac, including first editions, signed and finely bound copies, and original artwork.

By the age of sixteen Dulac had become known for his ability to render professional art-nouveau work. Raised and educated in Toulouse, he studied law for two years at the Lycée de Toulouse until he became disenchanted and moved to Paris, where he enrolled full time at the École des Beaux Arts in 1900.

    Stories from the Arabian Nights.

    Retold by Laurence Housman.
Signed limited edition, number 309 of 350 copies numbered and signed by the artist. It was this book that first announced Dulac's status as a popular artist, confirming him as "a direct challenger in the illustrated gift book market to the work of Arthur Rackham. Susan Lambert noted that, compared to Rackham, Dulac ‘made greater use of the breakthrough in four-colour printing, conceiving and modelling his pictures in colour rather than adding colours to a linear design'" (ODNB). Stories from The Arabian Nights.

First edition, first impression. "[Dulac's] status as a popular artist was assured when he was commissioned by Hodder and Stoughton to illustrate a new edition of The Arabian Nights (1907)" (ODNB). It has also been noted that "Edmund Dulac became Rackham's rival in the gift-book field after the publication of... Arabian Nights... in which the mystery of the East was well evoked by the artist's current passion for deep blues and purples" (Whalley & Chester, A History of Children's Book Illustration, 1988, p.
