  1. Scenes of Clerical Life.

    Scenes of Clerical Life.

    In two volumes.
First edition in book form of George Eliot's first published novel, three stories that had previously been serialized in Blackwood's Magazine. The tales, centering around three provincial clergymen, focus less on theological issues than on the ethical problems faced by them in their daily lives. This theme of persons diffusing great moral energy into inconspicuous provincial channels foreshadows much of what would concern Eliot in her later masterpiece Middlemarch. Learn More

  4. 116177

    Adam Bede.

First edition of the author's first novel. The condition of this set is surprisingly good, given its provenance from a lending library; the title is second on Sadleir's list of comparative scarcity for fine condition in original cloth, due to the high proportion of copies that were acquired by lending libraries. Sadleir notes that whereas Eliot's first book, Clerical Life, was bought by the public in a much higher proportion than normal, and only a small proportion went into circulating libraries, Adam Bede made "a hit with a different and much larger public: the Libraries re-order and second and third editions follow quickly.
