JOYCE, James.

Rare books by James Joyce including first edition, signed first edition, and finely bound copies of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.

James Joyce (1882–1941) was a leading figure in literary modernism and the author of the revolutionary novels Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. Though Joyce also published a number of pamphlets and small poetry collections during his lifetime, he is known best for the four fictional masterpieces discussed below:

  1. Chamber Music.

    Chamber Music.

First edition, first impression, second variant binding, with thick wove endpapers and the poems in signature C poorly centred on the page. It is now thought that very few copies of the first edition were actually gathered and bound in 1907 - perhaps only fifty or a hundred. When Joyce was famous in the 1920s, Elkin Mathews seem to have "rediscovered" the remainder and bound them up in a slightly darker green cloth. Learn More

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

First edition, first printing. It was Huebsch who undertook the true first publication in book form, first published on 29 December 1916. He sent from this print run about 750 sets of sheets for issue in the UK the following February. Learn More
