    On the Road.

First edition, first printing, presentation copy to Pieter W. Fosburgh and his wife Liza, inscribed by the author in red crayon, "To Peter [sic] and Liza Fosburgh, Writing in red crayon in memory of the Red House, Jack Kérouac [sic] (Idiot) (St. Jack of the Germs)" [the last five words in pencil]. A fascinating presentation. Pieter Whitney Fosburgh (1915-1978), author of the proto-conservationist book, The Natural Thing: the Land and its Citizens (New York: Macmillan, 1959), was editor of New York State's Department of Conservation magazine. First edition, first impression, Evergreen Books issue. Inscribed on the front free endpaper in blue ink by the author: "Dear Jeff, This is the final Baroque version of the Faust Legend, mixed with some New England Gothicism, Jack Kerouac." The recipient was Jeff Geilich, and it would appear that Henri Cru, Kerouac's longtime friend dating from his high school years at Horace Mann prep school, got the book inscribed for Geilich and then mailed it to him, at the Carmel Country Club (now the Sedgewood Club) in Carmel, New York.
