C. S. Lewis (1898–1963) was a literary scholar, Christian apologetic, and the author of the Chronicles of Narnia. He spent a large part of his career as an English professor at Merton College, Oxford, where he was a member of the literary group The Inklings and a good friend of J. R. R. Tolkien.

    Lewis's most famous lectures at Oxford were his twice weekly "Prolegomena lectures", which formed the basis of The Discarded Image (published posthumously in 1964). Lewis's trademark style was to speak so slowly and clearly, in such well-planned sections, that his lectures virtually invited being transcribed.
