A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers.

First edition of Thoreau's first book. Thoreau published at his own expense an edition of 1,000 copies: less than 300 sold, and in 1853 the remainder was returned to him - 256 bound up and 450 in sheets - prompting his rueful journal entry: "I have now a library of nearly 900 volumes, over 700 of which I wrote myself." The present copy has the three lines of text which were dropped from the bottom of p. Learn More

    Letters to Various Persons.

This volume compiles a large number of letters written by Thoreau to correspondents such as his wife, his sister, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with nine poems. An exceptional copy, Thoreau's books are rarely found in such beautiful condition. Learn More

    A Yankee in Canada.

    With Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers.
First edition in binding variant with wreath centrepieces and sans serif lettering. Neither the design nor the cloth variant are listed in BAL, unsurprising as a number of binding styles were used on the first edition with no precedence. The volume recounts Thoreau's 1850 trip to Canada and includes ten essays such as the influential "Civil Disobedience", on the individual's responsibility to resist immoral government policies such as slavery and the Mexican-American war.
