    Design for a plate.

The pattern shows strong stylistic similarity to plates designed by Vanessa Bell for the Omega Workshops, founded by members of the Bloomsbury Group and established in July 1913. Omega closed in 1919, after a clearance sale, and was officially liquidated on 24 July 1920. The same aesthetic imbued Charleston, East Sussex, the country home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. Poems and Drawings.

First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Albers, one of 500 copies printed, in the very scarce dust jacket. This copy has a rare inscription by Albers to front free endpaper, "Margaret Schaack, with pleasure my A." We must assume Albers was here incorporating his initial into a sarcastic "With pleasure my A[ss]". This bilingual edition of Albers poems, accompanied by full page drawings, "is the first time that Albers has authorised a collection of his poems, almost all of them unpublished, and to accompany them he has chosen the largest number of his drawings yet to be reproduced as a group" (Jacket front flap). Mamluk Costume.

    A Survey.
First edition, first impression of the first monograph on medieval Islamic costume since Reinhard Dozy's Dictionnaire détaillé, published in 1845. Mayer's findings, based on literary and documentary evidence and focusing on the development of court ceremonial under al-Nasir Muhammad, are still authoritative today. The Mamluks were a Turkic slave dynasty who ruled Egypt, Syria and the Hijaz from the overthrow of the Ayyubid dynasty in 1250 to the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517, with Cairo as their capital. First edition of this handsomely illustrated double volume, with fine chromolithographic plates reproducing illustrations from illuminated medieval manuscripts and more recent sources including paintings by Hogarth. Planché was by profession a playwright, and while his plays themselves are now largely forgotten, he revolutionised stage practice in the 19th century by introducing a preference for historically accurate costume, starting with a performance of King John at Covent Garden in 1823. But your grandchildren will snap across the entire continent in 24 hours on a new kind of highway and in a new kind of carthat is controlled by the push of a button!" (flap blurb). Learn More

    The Decoration of Houses.

First edition, first printing. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Vernon Lee from Edith Wharton January 1898". An important association copy: the recipient is the art historian Violet Paget (1856-1935) who wrote under the pseudonym of Vernon Lee. "Wharton made few friendships with other women writers, and Vernon Lee, brilliant, loquacious, difficult, eccentric and mannish (she wore ‘the style preferred by intellectual lesbians - a man's shirt, foulard and velvet jacket over a long skirt'), was not to be a lifelong friend.
