    The musical score of God Save the King, with Eight Variations for the Piano, by Friedrich Wilhelm Michael Kalkbrenner (1785-1849), then one of the foremost pianists in Europe, and only to be surpassed with the emergence of Chopin, Lizst and Thalberg in the 1830s. The score was first published in the UK in 1815, and reviewed in The Quarterly Musical Magazine and Review in 1822 thus: "The musical world were often regretting the want of some original characteristic variations upon the national anthem ‘God Save the King', for except the meagre ones by Bach, and those of Dussek (not in his happiest manner,) we have seen none that could for a moment arrest the attention of persons who from the national predilection are attached to the air.
