  1. 114434

    New York.

    With a foreword by H. G. Wells.

First edition, first impression, with the rare dust jacket: a remarkable survival, we have traced just two copies at auction since 1975. Coburn's New York is one of the cornerstone photobooks of the 20th century and considerably more scarce than the photographer's groundbreaking sister publication, London, put out in the same format in 1909. "Of the two books, it is the New York volume that might be considered the more proto-modernist in spirit, not only because New York itself was the most palpably modern city, epitomized by that great leitmotif of early modernist photography, the skyscraper, but also because the form of the city, as created by these large, monolithic buildings, pushed Coburn towards a more radical way of seeing" (Parr & Badger). 3. London.

    London.

With an Introduction by Hilaire Belloc.
First edition, first impression. Coburn made all the gravures himself, etching and steel-facing the plates, grinding the inks, pulling the proofs on various papers until he got the print he wanted, and then supervising the entire print run. The 1909 folio edition of one of Coburn's greatest books was reissued in smaller format in 1914. This first edition was done in very small numbers and issued jointly in the UK and USA. Learn More
