    Tagore writes to an unnamed recipient: "Dear Madam: I have been touched by the story of your suffering as related in your letter of Jan 12; I permit myself to offer you my sympathy. The demands made on my health and on my time are too many to enable me to write to you as often as I could wish. Yours sincerely, Rabindranath Tagore". Santi-Niketan was the ashram founded by Tagore in 1901, ostensibly as a place of meditation for Hindus of all castes, though the gesture has also been situated within the "upsurge of swadeshi (nationalist) activity in Bengal (and other parts of India) around the turn of the century.
