Artist

Matisse, Henri

Signed and limited edition prints, artist proof prints and rare works by Henry Matisse.

Henry Matisse (1869-1954) is considered, alongside Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His colourful art and explosive technique had defined the way we look at colour and art nowadays.

After an early period when he was working and associated with the Fauvist movement, Matisse visited Morocco and Spain studying the Moorish architecture and style in those countries. Characteristic of these years are the exuberant colour patterns and designs; the odalisques and harems scenes which remind us of Delacroix and Ingres, an homage of the classical French tradition.

He was also a book illustrator, working closely with James Joyce in a series of etchings for Ulysses in 1935. The luxury edition was limited to 1,500 of which only 250 were signed by the author.
