Beautiful engraving of this variety of gladiolus, flanked by smaller depictions of bulb and interior of flower. The Belgian, Pierre Joseph Redoute, ‘Raphael of flowers’, was patronized at the French court by Marie Antoinette, and after the revolution by Napoleon and Josephine.
