Finely engraved and detailed chart shows “Part of the Island of Tchu-San” with a block plan of the City of Ting Hai, and includes dozens of small islands with detailed notes on passages and depth soundings between them. Depicts rocks and other dangers and suggested anchorages. Two inset charts at bottom showing the island of Tchu-San and its harbour locating the South Gate of the City of Ting-Hai, the Burying Ground, Temple of Fu and Stone Piers and a unique circular panoramic view from an anchorage in the harbour. The ship “Clarence” was part of the Squadron that took Lord Macartney and John Barrow to China in order to establish the British Embassy in Pekin in 1793. Scale in nautical miles. Much interesting commentary.

Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Very good condition; water stains to the margins slightly affecting the right part of the image. Size: 37.5 x 56.5 cm.
