DAWSON, Lt Robert.
Robert Dawson was born in Dover, and after studying at the Royal Military Academy in Woolich, he was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1818, aged 20. In 1831 he was asked to conduct a thorough survey into boundaries of the proposed Parliamentary Boroughs for the Great Reform Act. The plan of Portsmouth is signed by Dawson in the lower right corner. The plan is accompanied by its original page of text.
