Title page. Scenery of Portugal and Spain.
George Vivian (1798-1873), draughtsman and painter from London, travelled through Spain and Portugal making sketches of many old buildings and towns. On his return Vivian made the drawings famous publishing a collection of lithographs under the title “Scenery of Portugal & Spain”. The work consists of 33 magnificent drawings on stone by L. Haghe. Vivian selected the most interesting and picturesque scenes for the lithographs, delivering a vivid picture of the countries in the early nineteenth century. This very decorative title page shows the Tower of Belem in Lisbon. Vivian notes: ‘The Front of Belem near the mouth of the Tagus. The Arch that forms the border to the view, is composed of Gothic ornaments and devices, that occur in the Architecture of Spain & Portugal, in the 14 and 15 centuries.’ Engraved by HAGHE, L.
