Wotton the seat of Thomas Horton
This print of Wotton is a wonderful example of Johannes Kip’s work. The house is rendered with great care and detail; and the surrounding formal gardens and distant nature are illustrated with luxurious fullness. In the distance beyong the river severn is the city of Gloucester, with its cathedral. It was originally produced for the remarkable Britannia Illustrata before being published in Robert Atkyns’ The Ancient & Present State of Gloucestershire. A talented draughtsman & engraver, Johannes Kip (1653-1722) was a Dutchman who settled in England at the end of the 17th century.
