Woman with a Beard together with Preliminary Sketch for Woman with a Beard.
Edition of 750. Woman with a Beard signed in pencil lower right by Lowry. Fine Art Trade Guild blindstamp lower left. Preliminary Sketch with the Fine Art Trade Guild blindstamp lower middle. These prints were issued as a pair. Printed after a 1957 oil painting. When a bearded woman boarded Lowry’s railway compartment at Newport he was delighted. ‘Well Sir’ he told a friend, ‘I could not let such an opportunity pass so I began almost at once to make a drawing of her on a bit of paper. At first she was greatly troubled but we talked and by the time the train had reached Paddington we were the best of friends – we even shook hands on the platform.’
