(MULLIGAN, Gerry) KIESER, Günther.
Gerry Mulligan & The Concert Jazz Big Band,
Kongress Halle, Frankfurt am Main, Nov. 11 1960.
First printing, designed by Gunther Kieser and signed by the him at the centre of the right margin. Günther Kieser (born 1930) is one of Germany’s pre-eminent poster artists, whose work can be found in the collections of major museums including, The Tokyo Museum, The Louvre and The Museum of Modern Art. He has had a prolific and varied career, during which his technically innovative, provocative and brilliant designs have kept him in the forefront of European poster art. Kieser is perhaps best known for his jazz and rock concert posters, and particularly for the work he did for the German concert producers Lippman & Rau from the 1950-80’s, and for whom he effectively acted as in house designer. This is a striking example of a vintage Kieser jazz poster, designed during the period of his collaboration with Hans Michel, produced exclusively for the Mulligan Concert Band’s appearances in Germany alongside Zoot Sims and Bob Brookmeyer, and extremely uncommon thus, particularly signed by the artist.
