A New Map of Italy
distinguishing all the Sovereignties in it, whether State, Kingdoms, Dutchies, Principalities, Republics &c...
This large scale, but very striking map of Italy by Herman Moll shows the country divided into its many different constituent parts; Central Italy is ruled by the Vatican, southern Italy is The Kingdom of Naples, The Doges in Venice controlled the north east, and down the Dalmation coast. The Genoese controlled the region around Liguria, and House of savoy were based in Turin, and Milan was the home of The Lombards. A very large and decorative title cartouche, with religious overtones is seen in the top right corner. The lower left of the map depicts the two active volcanoes of Etna and Vesuvius. Published in Moll’s ‘New and Compleat Atlas’.
