AA, Pieter van der.
Carte du Gouvernment de Normandie,
suivant les Nouvelles Observations de Messrs de L'Academie Royale des Sciences etc...
Pieter van der AA (1659-1733) was from a family of booksellers and publishers in Leiden, who flourished during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. His work was well executed and highly regarded by his contemporaries. The maps themselves are easily recognised and distinguished by their attractive title cartouches, and for the precise cartographic detail they contain. This is a lovely map of the northern, coastal French region of Normandy. It was from the Norman city of Caen that Duke William of Normandy (“William the Conqueror”) set sail for England, to begin what became “The Norman Conquest”.
