WILLS, W. D. & H. O.
One of a series of portraits of famous musicians issued by the Imperial Tobacco Company, founded by the Bristol tobacco manufacturers W. D. and H. O. Wills. Mendelsshon (1809-47) was a German organist, composer, pianist and conductor. His essentially conservative musical tastes, however, set him apart from many of his more adventurous musical contemporaries. Mendelssohn was particularly well-received in Britain as a composer, conductor and soloist, where many of his major works were premiered.
