This a lovely, well engraved and detailed ‘bird’s eye’ view of the north eastern French town of Metz in Lorraine. The plan highlights the towns excellent fortifications and street layout. It is by the accomplished Swiss engraver and publisher, Matthaus Merian. He became extremely well known for his meticulous engravings of plans and of town views in the seventeenth century. This particular engraving comes from Gottfried’s ‘Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica’. (ref: Tooley’s Dictionary of Mapmakers ‘K-P’ page 240).
