Details

First edition. Described on the title as "Ingénieur-Mécanicien du Roi", Berthelot (1718-1800) rose from humble origins to the professorship of mathematics in the Military School in Paris, where in 1763 he invented a famous gun carriage for use in coastal artillery, though the invention was generally credited to Gribeauval who was largely responsible for its adoption. Although the title in this collection of his designs calls for 120 plates, there are 132, with some in the second volume duplicated and with better explanations of the designs. Benjamin Franklin owned a copy of this work.
