First edition, first impression of this richly illustrated anthropological study of the Ekoi people, whose territory stretches across southeastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Talbot was British district commissioner in Degama and a prolific amateur ethnographer and plant collector. He described and photographed many Ekoi rituals and artefacts for the first time.

Octavo. Original green diapered cloth, titles gilt to spine and front board, mounted illustration to front board as usual, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Colour frontispiece with tissue guard, 77 photographic plates, folding area map coloured in outline, folding plate of wall decorations, frequent illustrations to the text. Tips and spine-ends very lightly rubbed, light finger-soiling to bottom edge of prelims, fore edge of sig. K5 chipped where roughly opened and closed tear to fore edge of P2, neither affecting text, short closed tear along map fold. A very good copy.
