Third edition, published in the same year as the first. Intended by his brother as a detailed corrective to the account of Major Barttelot’s conduct in command of the Rear Column, which Stanley had given in his In Darkest Africa.
Octavo. Original red coth, title gilt to spine, armorial to the upper board, patterned endpapers. Mounted Woodburytype portrait frontispiece, one photogravure plate and 2 full-page illustrations to the text, 2 folding maps at the rear. A little rubbed and soiled, rebacked with the original spine, relined, laid down, plate slightly hygroscopically stained in the lower margin, light toning, a very good copy.
