First edition, first printing, very scarce: only seven copies located by OCLC (all in US institutional libraries), not in Copac. The jacket’s breathless blurb outlines the plot: “The story of Marie-Rose Martiny, who, disappointed in love at the age of fifteen, resolves to sell her beauty for fame and wealth… She becomes, as Mimi Desfleurs, the world’s most famous courtesan, and an applauded actress. She becomes mistress to a king, – her only love, Lord Filiberto, – the royal lover… A study of passionless passion, the passion for success, and underneath the touching story of a disillusioned woman eagerly seeking illusion”. The jacket is a marvellous period piece.

Octavo. Original pinkish-red cloth, black lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. Peripheral nicks and creases to jacket, spine rolled. An excellent copy.
