First edition, first printing of the enduringly popular story of a resourceful and loyal sheep dog. The Yorkshire-born author was a failed Hollywood screenwriter, somewhat ironical in that his book became the basis for the famous film starring Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor (1943), six sequels, six television series, and an updated remake of the first film in 1994.

Octavo. Original bright orange cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover with Lassie’s head blocked in black and white, map endpapers printed in black and blue, top edge stained orange. With the colour printed dust jacket. Colour frontispiece, 6 full-page illustrations, uncoloured, vignette chapter heads by Marguerite Kirmse. Boards a touch soiled, gift inscription to front free endpaper, in the dust jacket with shallow chipping and creasing to top edges, ends of spine with chipping, wear along flap folds, with a hint of soiling to panels. A very good copy.
