First edition thus, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “Katherine Anne, September 25, 1965, Washington D.C., with love”. With the ownership signature of the poet Barbara Howes, and the bookplate of Howes and her husband William Jay Smith, sometime United States poet laureate. Contains, loosely inserted, a holograph letter signed (dated 14 May 1965) from the author thanking them for her birthday poem and asking them to come and visit her in Washington because “I am not well and cannot go out”. It is assumed that the poem mentioned is William Jay Smith’s “A friend laughing: a rose for Katherine Anne Porter”, published (27 June 1965) in the Washington Star in celebration of Porter’s 75th birthday, and that this book was inscribed for the couple when they came to visit her in Washington. A charming document of a close literary friendship.

Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to upper board and spine in black. With the dust jacket. Spine tanned, with light spotting to covers and endpapers. A very good copy, internally fresh, in the somewhat rubbed and marked jacket.
