First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the film producer Darryl F. Zanuck on the front free endpaper, “To Colonel Darryl Zanuck, in sincere admiration and affection, Damon Runyon, 1944.” Zanuck was commissioned as a Colonel in the Army Signal Corps in 1941, when the US entered the Second World War. Runyon subsequently wrote the introduction to Zanuck’s 1943 book, Tunis Expedition, an account of the producer’s experiences in filming the start of the North African Campaign with the Signal Corps.

Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to front board and spine in red, top edge red. With the pictorial dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled; an excellent copy in the jacket with sunned spine, some loss to spine ends and some nicks and shallow chips to extremities.
