First US edition, first printing. The Bridge, Crane’s major work, was first published in limited format in Paris by the Black Sun Press in February 1930, some six weeks in advance of the Liveright edition which was intended to be the trade edition. Harry Crosby’s suicide in December 1929, while publication was still being arranged, was a sad portent of Crane’s own tragic end. Walker Evans, whose photographs illustrate both editions, was then unknown.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to front board and spine gilt. Frontispiece photograph of the Brooklyn Bridge by Walker Evans. A fine copy.
