The Last Don.
First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to Joseph Heller and his second wife, Valerie, “For Valerie and Joe, we’re even. One book equals 2 Italian dinners. Affectionately, Mario.” Both Puzo and Heller belonged to the Gourmet Club, a group of male friends who prided themselves on being both good talkers and good eaters. The club, which also included Mel Brooks, Joseph Stein, and Speed Vogel, met regularly at New York restaurants from the 1960s to the 1980s.
