The Last of the Mohicans; A Narrative of 1757.
In Two Volumes.
First edition of Cooper’s best known and best loved classic, the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales series, although the first to be published.
2 volumes, duodecimo (184 110 mm). Bound in contemporary quarter sheep, marbled sides, black morocco labels to spine lettered gilt, edges speckled brown. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco solander box. Pictorial bookplates to front pastedowns. An unusually fresh copy of this poorly produced book. Edges slightly worn, contents mildly toned and foxed throughout, but much less so than is usually seen. Some minor flaws to contents, as often. Volume I: short closed tear to margin of volume I, p.91, partially affecting text, small wax-stain to p.126. Volume II: some marginal damage, none affecting text (p. 273: short closed tear to head and chip to foot; p. 281, short closed tear; p. 289, small hole above page number), and lacks the final blank leaf following the title-page, often lost in binding, otherwise complete. A truly exceptional set.
