First trade edition, first printing. A long narrative poem about an African-American boxer, and the basis for the 1949 film noir directed by Robert Wise and starring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter. Scarce in the jacket.

Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to spine brown, silhouette to front board brown, top edge brown. With the dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, front board a little bowed, tips bumped, minor spotting to edges. A very good copy in the price-clipped and sunned jacket with some shallow chips to extremities and minor loss to head of spine.
