Finely bound early edition of this important work of Americana. Bartlett made four trips to America starting in 1836, producing topographical views which were to serve as illustrations for this work. Originally published by George Virtue in 1840. Rarely found in such nice condition.

2 volumes in one, quarto (273 x 210 mm). Contemporary green calf, red and brown morocco labels, spine richly gilt in compartments, boards panelled in gilt and blind, front board with initials “H.F.” gilt-stamped, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles, brown coated endpapers. Steel-engraved vignette titles, one map, and 118 plates after W. H. Bartlett. Boards slightly rubbed, rear board a little scuffed, occasional light foxing to contents. A fine copy.
