Captain Cook’s Journal

First edition edited by the naval officer and hydrographer to the Royal Navy Sir William James Lloyd Wharton (1843-1905). “An authoritative printed account of what Cook himself had to say about his first voyage, did not appear until 1893, when Captain Wharton published the MSS of Cook’s journal, with an introduction and notes” (NMM).
Tall square octavo (255 x 180 mm). Contemporary blue-green half morocco, decorative gilt spine, green linen sides, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Portrait frontispiece of Cook, maps, plans and plates reproduced from the original edition. Ownership inscription at head of title page: “Ducie, May 1893”, Berkeley Basil Moreton, 4th Earl of Ducie (1834-1924), British peer, politician and pastoralist in Australia. Spine lightly sunned, an excellent copy, handsomely bound.
