First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the second blank to Lady Juliet Duff: “Dear Juliet, I don’t expect you to read this. I’m only sending it for fear you might buy it. It is a poor return for the delightful weekend. Love from Evelyn.” Lady Juliet Duff was introduced to Evelyn Waugh through Diana Cooper, a mutual friend. Waugh stayed for the weekend at Bulbridge, Wilton, near Salisbury from 29 June to 1 July 1934. With Lady Juliet’s bookplate to the front pastedown. The book was first published in London in 1934.

Octavo. Original yellow cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board in green, top edge green. Frontispiece, 22 plates and a folding map. Spine rolled and slightly faded, occasional faint foxing to contents; an excellent copy.
