First edition, first impression. Rare in the dust jacket. This copiously illustrated volume recounts the author’s travels during 1908 and 1909 in the north-west Amazon, “between the River Issa and the River Apaporis where the white men had scarcely penetrated previously” (preface). Whiffen includes much detailed information on the cultural practices, religious beliefs, and material culture of the indigenous peoples.

Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece and 54 plates, 5 maps of which 3 are folding. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Cloth very lightly rubbed at extremities, a little light spotting to contents. An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with some closed tears and small chips.
