First edition. “Captain Erskine sailed from Russell, New Zealand, in 1849, and reached Niue or Savage Island. He visited Manua,Tutuila and Upolu of the Samoan Islands. Next Vava’u, Lifuka, and Tongatabu were visited, then Fiji, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and Port Jackson” (Hill).
Octavo. Publisher’s violet cloth, title gilt to the spine, gilt and blind decoration to the boards, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down. all edges gilt. Colour lithographic frontispiece and 3 other similar plates – “up to three tints” Abbey – 3 wood-engraved plates and many wood-engraved illustrations to the text, folding track chart at the rear. Neat contemporary prize inscription to the front free endpaper. A little rubbed and sunned, some light foxing to the plates, light toning else, remains a pleasing copy in cloth.
