First edition. Uncommon, COPAC locates sets at Oxford, Cambridge, the Universities of London and Nottingham, and the V & A; OCLC adds the Getty, the Huntington, Yale and McGill. No complete set at auction in the last 40 years, this run, in common with that V & A, lacks the last issue for 27 March 1869. A short-lived periodical, in an already short run publication was suspended from 22 February to 27 June 1868, from a short-lived publishers. Zorn & Co., for whom we can trace only one other publication, The Floral Decoration of Churches at Christmas … with numerous illustrations in colours and gold, by W. G. and G. A. Audsley – who contribute an article to the present work on the art of illumination – also of 1868 and just two copies recorded, Oxford and BL. Zorn were looking for a niche in the market, aiming to place “within the reach of all classes of people an Art Journal, illustrated in colours, and in all respects of a high order of merit,” and that niche was clearly not a sufficient toe-hold to maintain the business. An appealing miscellany of articles on artistic themes; exhibition reviews; artist biographies; techniques; materials, and most interestingly “illustrated lessons,” with numerous plates in tinted and coloured lithography.

2 volumes quarto (276 191 mm). Contemporary black calf, bevelled boards, title gilt to spines, raised bands, gilt devices in the compartments, attractive gilt and blind panelling to boards, cream surface-paper endpapers, gilt edges. Volume I with 78 tipped-in chromolithographs; volume II with 73. A little rubbed, joints skilfully restored, some browning of the text, and offsetting from the plates, small contemporary ink ownership stamps to endpapers and some plates, but overall a very good set.
