First editions, all published. Uncommon. An excellent set of these important works of naval ethnography, forming a series on boat construction around the world. The series was planned as a supplement to Admiral François-Edmond Paris’ famous Souvenirs de Marine Conservés … , first published in 1877, the Fascicule Introductif including an index to Paris’ work, and reprinting his five plates of the Bateaux de Cochinchine. Each fascicule offers a detailed account of the boat-building techniques of a particular region, comprising; Les Jonques des Chinois du Siam; Pirogues et Ca-vom de l’Ouest Cochinchinois; Les Barques de Mer de Rachgia; La Machoua de Versova; and Les Barques du Moyen Niger. It was an ambitious project, planned under the direction of the Centre de Recherche Culturelle de la Route des Indes in Djibouti, the series was also projected encompass sections on “ethnographie terrestre” and “archéologie terrestre”. However when the Parisian publisher Gauthier-Villars folded, the project collapsed. These five thematic fascicules, together with the sixth introductory part – “exposant les idées générales” of the collection – appear to have been all that were published.

Five quarto fascicules. Sewn in the original printed light card wraps. In all 6 folding plates and one folding map, 12 plates from photographs, numerous illustrations to the text, some full-page a few with spot colour. many illustrations (some in colour); Wraps a little sunned in places, minor marginal soiling and some foxing to fascicule 3, contents lightly browned, but overall very good.
