Second edition, first published in Paris 1681, under the title Manière de fortifier selon la méthode de monsieur de Vauban. One of the most popular and influential early interpretations of Vauban’s theories: “Numerous editions of this work by DuFay and le Chevalier de Cambray, a French engineer, were published in Paris and Amsterdam between 1681 and 1771. Most editions, including the first (Paris, 1681) – bore DuFay’s name only. DuFay wrote the parts on geometry while Cambray wrote those on fortification” (OCLC). Elegantly engraved nineteenth-century book-ticket of Alexander Carlile to the front pastedown, later collector’s plate to the front free endpaper.

Octavo (199 113 mm). Slightly later calf, neatly rebacked with the original label laid down. Frontispiece, title-page vignette, 30 folding plates. Somewhat rubbed, particularly at the board edges, now judiciously restored and presenting well, light browning, a very good copy.

Bibliography: Sloos, Warfare and the Age of Printing, 08061, lacking one plate.
