First and only edition. Presentation copy from the artist, inscribed on the title page: “With compliments to Comte de Soissons, from James J. Guthrie, 23.11.00”. Guthrie (1874-1952) was “a talented hand printer and founded the Pear Tree Press… [he] was one of the leading wood engravers associated with the developments of the private presses and the return to romanticism” (Houfe, The Dictionary of 19th Century British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists, p. 162). Scarce: Copac cites copies at just six British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Oxford, Scotland, V&A, Cambridge, Trinity College Dublin), OCLC locates another 13 worldwide.

Square octavo (24 pp.). Original drab green printed wrappers pasted to boards and the stitching renewed (remains of old binding, previously used to house this copy). Illustrations throughout. Wrappers toned at periphery, chipped at edges, lightly toned internally, slight bump to top corner.
