Contemporary engraved profile bust portrait, “Captn. James Cook F.R.S.”
Striking portrait of the stern-faced explorer, the irradiations, which over-run the borders of the name tablature, giving him an almost visionary aspect. Bock was a Nuremberg-based engraver and artist, probably best known for his work on Esper’s Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (1777-94). Scarce.
Stipple engraving with etching (166 × 101 mm). Oval portrait surrounded by etched irradiating lines. Light toning, trimmed to the plate-mark, very good.
