(KOKOSCHKA, Oskar) HOFFMAN, Edith.
Kokoschka. Life and Work.
With two essays by Oskar Kokoschka and a foreword by Herbert Read.
First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by Kokoschka on the front free endpaper, “Dearest Barbara and Jay Will, I know you are building a great myth in your hearts, may fate (which IS linked to myth in the imagination of the believer) grow in your mind to reality, you are holding it in your palms already – the wonder! I love you Oskar Kokoschka – Firenze XII, 1948.” The recipients were the poets Barbara Howes and William Jay Smith, whose bookplate is present and who married in 1947 and moved briefly to Italy, where this book was inscribed in reference to their building a new life together. A wonderful presentation.
