First edition, first impression of this handsomely produced work. Campbell had been vice-consul of Java and a partner in the firm of Maclaine Watson, who had been trading in Java since 1837. With a Javanese provenance, ownership inscription at head of title pages: “C. R. McCubbin, 34 Embong Kenongo, Saerabaya [Surabaya]” and with scattered oval library stamps (mainly on verso of plates). Titlepage of volume II with ownership inscription of Hubert Duck who, in the Preface to volume I (p. xii), receives the author’s thanks for “assistance in various ways”.

2 volumes, tall octavo (248 x 151 mm). Recent red half calf, decorative gilt spines, blue and green morocco twin labels, red cloth sides. Title pages printed in reddish-brown and black, numerous monochrome half-tone plates, folding coloured map of Java. Embossed address stamps at head of preliminary leaves in both volumes. A good set handsomely bound.
