First and only edition of this scarce handbook, with around 20 copies in libraries worldwide and rarely appearing in commerce. “The Andaman Islands are known to all students of Indian geography, and some may still have a vague idea of these islands as a Penal Settlement. Beyond this piece of knowledge very few know anything definite about this group of two hundred and four small islands in the Bay of Bengal … this charming book … will be welcomed by those who desire to know some of the hidden mysteries of the seas surrounding the Indian continent” (Foreword). Chevalier Varkey was a Malayali Catholic from Kerala who became president of the Kerala Catholic Trust.

Octavo. Original white printed paper-covered boards. 23 plates from the author’s photographs. Contemporary ownership inscription of “Rodney Stone, Port Blair, Andamans” to front pastedown. Somewhat rubbed and soiled externally, spine chipping at the tail, endpapers browned, text toned and with a scatter of very pale foxing, but overall very good.
