First edition in English, originally published in Munich in 1817. Uncommon, just 6 copies on COPAC, OCLC adds a single US location, the US Military Academy. A concise and valuable exposition of “a branch of Service which is allowed to be but imperfectly practised … in the British Army” (editor’s preface). Short joined the Coldstream Guards in 1814 as an ensign and served at Quatre Bras and in the defence of Hougoumont at Waterloo. Ownership inscription of Sir George Cathcart to the dedication leaf. Cathcart was also at Quatre Bras and Waterloo, as a-d-c to Wellington; he later succeeded Sir Harry Smith as governor and commander-in-chief at the Cape; and received the thanks of both Houses for his defeat suppression of the Sotha and Xhosa in 1852. He died at Inkerman in 1854. Bookplate of the Guards collector David Dalton to the front free endpaper.
Octavo (223 135 mm) Later half calf, linen boards, title gilt to spine, single gilt rules at spine and corner edges, marbled endpapers. Ex-Cavalry Club library, with their attractive bookplate to the front pastedown, joints repaired, light toning, but a very good copy.
