Children of the Mist. A Novel.
First edition, first impression. Presentation copy to R. D. Blackmore (1825–1900), whose admiration for this book gave an important early impetus to Phillpotts’s career. The dedication page is signed by Phillpotts; Blackmore has added in pencil: “Gone to live at ‘Cosdonnan, Torquay’ Nov 7 1898”. There is also a pencilled exclamation mark in Blackmore’s hand to the margin of page 4. Also included is a signed autograph letter dated 1884 from Phillpotts to Thomas Satchell, the bibliographer of fishing. The Children of the Mist is the key title of Phillpotts’s Dartmoor books, and this superb association copy links the two Devon authors.
