First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “To T. J. Hoyer, Claude Houghton”, below that, in pencil, “For Henry Miller with respect and in friendship, Larry Goldberg 9.2.64”. Miller was a great admirer of Houghton and this novel in particular, writing in his literary memoir The Books in My Life that Houghton, “Has done more than any Englishman… to profoundly alter my picture of England. I have by now read the majority of his works… But there is one… which seems to have been written especially for me. It is called Hudson Rejoins the Herd… What so startled me, in reading this book, was that it appeared to give a picture of my most intimate life during a certain crucial period. The outer circumstances were “disguised”, but the inner ones were hallucinatingly real. I could not have done better myself. For a time I thought that Claude Houghton had in some mysterious way gained access to these facts and events in my life”. In 1942 Miller also a letter to Houghton in which he described these events – his wife leaving him for another woman in 1927 – which inspired him to write Tropic of Capricorn. This copy was given to Miller by his friend Larry Goldberg, who ran the University of Chicago’s downtown bookstore and fought for Miller’s books to be stocked, after which the two men began a correspondence. A wonderful association copy.

Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt. Binding rubbed, ends of spine worn, upper board a little loose, a few spots to endpapers. A very good copy.
